A bench of justices Madan B Lokur and N V Ramana held that “this is a reality” that drought-hit farmers are committing suicides which must be corrected by the Centre.
Mere framing of policies is not enough and relief must be delivered at ground level, the SC told the centre.
The court was hearing a PIL filed by NGO ‘Swaraj Abhiyan’ seeking a direction to the government to provide free food grains to people in drought-hit areas as per the Food Security Act and minimum 150 days of employment under MGNREG Act.
