Vaiphei Appointed As Acting Chief Justice Of Gauhati High Court

Justice Tinlianthang Vaiphei, has been appointed as acting Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.
Vaiphei replaced Karanam Sreedhar Rao who retired as chief justice today after reaching the age of superannuation.
β€œIn exercise of the powers conferred by article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Tinlianthang Vaiphei, senior-most Judge of Gauhati High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court with effect from 21st October, 2015 consequent upon the retirement of Shri Justice Karanam Sreedhar Rao, Acting Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, Law Ministry order issued to this effect, said.
As per the HC website, Justice Patel (62), who hails from Manipur, graduated in Law from Delhi University in 1979 and started practising law in 1980.
He was elevated as an Additional Judge of the High Court on December July 17, 2003 and was confirmed as a permanent judge on February 28, 2005.
With the collegium yet to recommend names of judges for elevation after staging a comeback last week, the President on Monday used his powers under the Constitution to appoint an acting Chief Justice for the Gauhati High Court.
This is perhaps the first appointment in the higher judiciary after the Supreme Court struck down the National Judicial Appointments Commission and a related Constitutional Amendment Act which sought to scrap the collegium system. – PTI
