CJI H.L. Dattu recommends Justice T.S. Thakur as the next Chief Justice of the country

New Delhi, November 5: The Chief Justice of India (CJI), H.L. Dattu, on Wednesday, recommended Justice T.S. Thakur to the post of Chief Justice of India after his term ends in December. The recommendation will be sent to the Law Ministry which will then forward it to the Prime Minister’s Office for approval. It will then be sent to the President for his assent, thereby completing the final leg of the process.
Justice Dattu is to retire on December 2 and on the same day, Justice Thakur is to be sworn in as the new Chief Justice of India by President Pranab Mukherjee.
According to the memorandum on the process of appointments of the Chief Justice of India and the Supreme Court judges, the senior-most judge, “considered fit to hold the office,” is generally selected for the post of the CJI. Justice Thakur, presently the senior-most judge of the Apex Court, would be the 43rd Chief Justice of India.
Born in 1952 to Shri D.D. Thakur, a leading Advocate and later, a Judge of High Court of Jammu and Kashmir, Teerth Singh Thakur followed his father’s footsteps and is set to become India’s highest judicial authority. Enrolling at the Bar in the year 1972, he joined his father’s chambers to practice and specialize in Civil, Criminal, Constitutional, Taxation and Service matters in the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir. He was designated as a Senior Advocate in the year 1990 and was elevated to the Bench in 1994 and served as judge in the High Courts of Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, and Delhi.
He then took over as Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana on August 11, 2008 and was elevated to the Supreme Court on November 17, 2009. Thakur J., who is scheduled to retire on January 4, 2017, is likely to hold office for more than a year as the Chief Justice of India.
