Bike rental biz hits legal hurdle in Manali.

In Manali this year many rent a bike shops have nothing to cheer as government this year ordered not to rent private bikes on the Manali-leh road.
The operators say that they are in in a spot because Himachal Pradesh does not register two-wheelers as commercial vehicles. They are demanding that the government either register their bikes commercially or implement its own ‘Rent a Motorcycle Scheme, 1997′ that permits renting out of bikes with private registration numbers. The operators also say that they have requested many times chief minister and the transport minister to encourage bike tourism.
Riding on the Manali-Leh-Khardung La route is famous amongst adventure-seekers. Thousands of foreign tourists take the perilous route between June and September every year on bikes rented in Delhi or Manali. “We have been chasing officials with files since 2010 to get licensees for running our business, but nobody hears us,” said Manali Motorbikers’ Association president Keshav Ram, adding that they will meet Virbhadra and Bali to discuss licensing.
