The Bombay High Court on Wednesday (April 20) gave permission for the May 1 match in the Indian Premier League between Rising Pune Supergiants and Mumbai Indians to be held in Pune.
A two-judge bench consisting of Justice MS Karnik and VM Kanada had ruled last week that all matches in Maharashtra post April 30 be moved out of the state in view of the severe drought in that region, following which the Board of Control for Cricket in India had appealed that the May 1 match remain in Pune owing to logistical difficulties that will stem from a change in venue.
The Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune is due to host the Pune v Gujarat Lions match on April 29. The BCCI had argued that one day was too short a time to relocate broadcast and other requirements, and asked for the High Court’s permission to have the May 1 Maharashtra Derby as the last game in the state.
Following Wednesday’s ruling, 12 matches of IPL 9 will now be shifted out of Maharashtra – four from Mumbai, five from Pune and three from Nagpur. The three home matches of Mumbai Indians will most likely be played in Jaipur, while the May 29 final will move from the Wankhede Stadium to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Rising Pune Supergiants’ last three home games are set to be played in Visakhapatnam, while the Eliminator and Qualifier 2 will be staged at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The three matches Kings XI Punjab were to play at their second home in Nagpur are expected to be split between original home Mohali and Dharamsala.
