New Delhi, September 22 : The Delhi High Court on Tuesday turned down a plea seeking cancellation of visa of the Bangladeshi author and scriptwriter, Taslima Nasreen.
The PIL was brought by an NGO called All India Human Rights & Social Justice Front and heard by a Division Bench comprising of Delhi High Court Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath.
The petition sought cancellation of Nasreen’s visa for violation of various provisions of The Foreigners Act, 1946 and Foreign Orders, 1948.
Advocate Nafis Ahmad Siddiqui, appearing for the NGO, argued that Nasreen had released her film ‘Nirbashito’ at the Mumbai Film Festival without obtaining prior permission from the government and also attempted to air a serial on TV in Kolkata.
The NGO had earlier approached the Apex Court with a similar plea, alleging that “Nasreen’s presence in India is an annoyance,” as she has violated the laws in the country. The Apex Court had however, refused to entertain the plea and asked the NGO to approach the Delhi High Court instead.
