Speaking as the chief guest at the second convocation of Chanakya National Law University (CNLU), Chief Justice of India H L Dattu expressed his concern over the increasing cost of legal service due to which most citizens can ill-afford legal aid. Justice is not a commodity to be sold, it must be service-oriented, ensuring proper justice to the people in distress. He called upon the younger generation not to hanker after “lucrative” legal profession but to become the champions of social justice. The legal education must not produce unethical literates, he said.
He stated that the legal profession, which was once considered a very noble one, is slowly losing its credibility and respectability in the country. Only an honest and clean legal profession can serve the society well and help establish rule of law and peace, he said.
Dattu also hit out at the problem of prolonged litigation causing immense hardship to the poor due to delay in justice. He said the youths of Bihar need not look beyond the boundary of the state for inspiration as their own state has produced a number of luminaries. Try to emulate those great leaders and live up to the rich tradition and cultural heritage created by them, he added.
