Rajasthan, J&K, Ahmedabad fall prey to meat beef ban

September 11, 2015: The meat and beef ban spread on Thursday to the states of Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir and Ahmedabad with the issue of such directives even as protests continued in Mumbai where the High Court ruled that a prohibition on sale of meat is not feasible.
The Rajasthan government declared a ban on the sale of meat and fish on September 17, 18 and 27 citing religious reasons.
According to official sources, the state government has, via circulars, notified all municipal bodies to see to the closure of meat shops and stoppage of sale of meat and fish on September 17 on account of the Jain fasting festival, ‘Paryushan’ , on September 18 on account of another Jain festival, ‘Sanvatsari’ and on September 27 in view of ‘Anant Chaturdashi’ This order is applicable to slaughter houses as well.
Meanwhile, in Jammu & Kashmir, The HC ordered a ban on sale of beef, triggering angry reactions by locals and various organisations such as Jamaat-e-Islam and separatist Hurriyat Conference. The HC Bar Association has however assured of challenging the order.
Similar ban on slaughter of cows and goats for a week, during the Jain fasting period is scheduled to begin from Thursday in Ahmedabad.
A public notification issued by Police Commissioner Shivanand Jha last night said slaughtering cattle, including cows, buffaloes, oxen, bulls and goats in open areas may disturb peaceful atmosphere and hurt religious sentiments of Jains during Paryushan, which is celebrated between September 10 and September 17.
The notification bars people from slaughtering animals outside authorized slaughter houses as well as in any other private or public place, which is visible to the public.
Action will be taken against those found guilty of violating the order under Section 188 (violation of police notification) of the Indian Penal Code. However, the notification does not ban slaughter inside official slaughter houses.
