Supreme Court disposed of the highest number of cases in 2014, reveals CJI HL Dattu

New Delhi, November 27: The Chief Justice of India, on Thursday, revealed that the Apex Court disposed of over 83 thousand cases in 2014, the highest in a year, since its inception.
“At this point, I want to use this platform to congratulate my brother judges and other counsels for their hard work and determination. As per the Supreme Court annual report, 2014 has seen the highest number of disposal of cases till date,” CJI HL Dattu, whose term of office is scheduled to end on December 2, was quoted as saying. A record-breaking 83,013 number of cases have been disposed of in the year 2014.
Dattu was addressing a gathering of lawyers and judges on the occasion of Law Day, organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association, when he urged his fellow judges to shun the complacent attitude and be the torch-bearers, in a movement against pendency and delay of case proceedings.
A tradition which began in 1979 under the leadership of Dr. LM Singhvi, Law Day is celebrated each year to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949. This year, the Government of India has heightened the importance of this day by declaring it to be henceforth celebrated as the “Constitution Day.”
The Chief Justice remarked that, in his opinion, the loopholes of judicial delay and pendency could be rectified by adjusting, modifying and inventing new court procedures. He also said that a lasting solution to all the problems of pendency and delays is cooperation between the bar and the bench and both have to work in tandem, giving paramount importance to the interest of the litigant .
